CHANGED MEMORIES

Prompt:: It’s a new day and a blank slate!

I remember when I wore a skirt which had a hole from an iron burn to school one Friday morning. It was Physical Education Day and I wore my white skirt to school, which my mother had ironed for me in the morning. Unbeknownst to me, my skirt had a hole at the back. It came to my attention when my classmates started to point and laugh at me! That is one of the memories which ,back then, I wish I didn’t remember. Perhaps, you have memories that you wished you did not remember as well!

Actually, it is natural under certain circumstances to feel that way. Sometimes, losing memories can be joyful! Getting that painful or embarrassing memory out of our heads sounds like a good deal! However, did you know that we have lost pieces of all our memories? Yes, our memories change all the time. It is like a story, which sometimes changes as we experience new things. Sometimes old memories and new memories intertwine to give us false memories ( Cherry, 2021). Therefore, if you would like to forget a memory, just remember that you have already forgotten a piece of it. In fact, maybe you have replaced the forgotten memory with a delightful false one. Maybe one day when I remember my skirt incident, I will imagine that my classmates were laughing at something else. Maybe, I will remember that my skirt was perfectly normal and it was a great day at school.

From dead memories, new memories can be birthed!

  1. The concept of false memories is so intriguing! Just a quick thought: your opening line can be more captivating by introducing some brevity for an easier read. Perhaps it can read, “I remember when I wore a skirt with a hole from an iron burn to school one Friday morning.” And the SpongeBob picture is hilarious.

  2. We’ve all been there with the hole in our pants/skirt, and I too wish I could forget. This is great. It’s hilarious and you highlighted the dynamic nature of memories and really showed how forgetting could be positive. You’ve also encouraged me to see forgotten memories as an opportunity for new memories to form.

Your reminiscence about the embarrassing skirt incident is relatable and adds a touch of humor to the narrative. Your exploration of the nature of memories and how they change over time, intertwining old and new experiences to create false memories, is intriguing.
