What This Project Is
To this, the larger project which examines Jamaican Voices: Real and/or imagined, my project, ‘The Truth Will Set You Free’ contributes an examination of the deplorable conditions within which the Voice of God and its associated religion finds itself in – Jamaican Christianity.
Under the umbrella of Jamaican Voices, my project focuses on: The Voice of God & How It is Portrayed in Jamaican Christianity – ‘The Voice Crying Out in the Wilderness.’ As a specialization within this theme of the Voice of God, I will be looking at “The mismanagement of Biblical resources for life and living by the Jamaican church; Silence where Shouting Should Ring Forth.”

What The Point of This Project Is
God put it on my heart to pursue this topic, since it has been my personal experience that the Jamaican church does a generally rotten job of firstly knowing and secondly allocating Biblical resources. This project’s aim is to make an effort to understand the mismanagement of Biblical resources for life and living by the Jamaican church. In order to do that, we must establish context for the church’s silence about widespread problems in the Jamaican society. For the scope of this project, we will be focusing on Mental Health/Mental Illness.

Who This Is Project For
At it’s heart, this project is for every Jamaican who:
- considers themselves Christian,
- has attended church in this lifetime,
- and associates themselves with belief in God.
Send this to all your relatives and friends and especially your pastors, is what I’m trying to say.
On it’s peripherals, I hope that this project will one day be a reference for:
- Historians of the Caribbean,
- and Sociologists of the Caribbean.
If it seems unrelated to those two disciplines, I promise you it’s not. And here’s why:

Information That I Cover/Touch
In order to come to a remotely accurate understanding of why the Jamaican church butchers the matter of Mental Health in relation to religion, this project had to:
Why these issues are not being spoken about through the lens of
- Why these issues are not being spoken about through the lens of
- The use/abuse of religion as the foundation/perpetuator of the Atlantic African slavery,
- The use/abuse of religion after emancipation through the oppression of African-descent freed people through the education system and publishing press of the time,
- the long-term effects of non-functional literacy on our engagement with the Bible as a symbol of religion and faith,
That’s where historians and sociologists of the Caribbean come in. And if you still don’t know what the connection is, don’t worry. They will.
