MP Khaylia B.

Hello dear beautiful reader! I am Khaylia Brown, a little church girl that resides in the ‘country’. I’m a university student whose major is plant biology and a minor in creative writing. I am an active reader and prasie dancer, and poetry is my new found talent. This course is a stepping stone to receiving my minor, hence, my participation in it. However, I’ve gotten to love the discussions surrounding media combined with writing. My hope is that upon the end of this course I’ll be able to critically analyze various media forms as well as be more ‘in-touch’ with it.

I recently read the article “Can Information Be Unfettered? Race and the New Digital Humanities Canon” by AMY E. (EARHARThttps://dhdebates.gc.cuny.edu/read/untitled-88c11800-9446-469b-a3be-3fdb36bfbd1e/section/cf0af04d-73e3-4738-98d9-74c1ae3534e5#ch18)

After readiing through about half of it, I found myself questioning the term ‘Digital Humanities’, I did this because separately I could understand and properly construct their definitions, but together they appeared more difficult. So, if you’re asking what it is as well, in my own terms I’ll say it is, ‘the combination of the technological world with the ecological community of humanities”. However if you are still confused about the definition please watch this video.https://youtu.be/3VcXXgmY9Rg

The article raised a point about text and other documentations being freely open to the public because of this new era of technology. This seemed to be a difficult pill to swallow for some professionals in the field of Digital Humanities, but somehow I cannot understand this reaction. Since, digital includes media from all angles it shows the increase in technological genius and education. Having certain forms of historical facts available to the public will widen their spectrum when it comes on to the world of humanities; they willl further be more aware of the genre. Therefore, it should not be seen as a downfall.

Unfortunately as the article explained, scholars realized that the ‘computer geeks’ or hackers are not readily accepting the idea of scholars within this group invading their space, aka, their market. I think the world wide web should be a community for all, not a place to disperse our various leadership roles or our dominance. But this is not the case, it might not even reach to that place where there is equality from all angles; much like other areas within society. That is: race, class, religion, gender, gender roles etc. It just falls under one, big umbrella.

If this is the case, do you think the Digital Humanitarians should promote the market by involving these ‘heavy’ topics?

Should a factor such as racism cause the downfall of digital humanities?

Food for thought!

  1. Khaylia, I appreciate how you wrote this analysis with a strong consideration of the audience. Your use of “I” and your guiding tone interspersed with questions for the reader were nicely done.

  2. Khaylia, this was a nice sweet read. I like that you gave your take on certain concepts that you got from the reading; that really helped to bring out your voice. The only thing that I would suggest is to hyperlink your text (such as the article title) so that the presentation is a little cleaner rather than having the ‘raw’ link appear in your text. Furthermore, it would’ve been a little nicer if you embedded the video that you asked us to watch instead of only linking it.

Khaylia , your bio was really well done, I got a lot of personality and a sense of who you are. I like the tone of your blog; it reads as if you already established a readership with whom you are very familiar. One note would be to embed the YouTube link, so we don’t have to leave the page to watch. Good job.

  4. Your response to the article was concise but presented an effective analysis and the questions for the readers at the end are a nice touch. You can consider hyperlinking instead of having the link displayed.
