Why this Topic?
After reading the syllabi on the course container and finding out shortly that I had to do a final project for this course, the voices of Disabled children immediately came to mind. The reason for this is because my mother works with disabled children at a private institution called Step Centre. I myself have also been around disabled children and have taken care of them from time to time. I have grown to love their company and have become friends with students at the school. Furthermore this is my reason for choosing the topic about disabled children. In addition, I wanted to provide a small platform for special needs children to share their opinions about almost any topic at hand and since this course is mainly about digital media it was the perfect idea to begin with.
The podcast will allow my listeners to hear the real voices of disabled people and not through a second or third person. Throughout my project, I discuss how disabled people’s voices are not actually heard or taken seriously and in some cases are spoken for by others around them such as a family member or friend. Therefore, this podcast will be a platform to communicate and share the opinions of special needs persons.
Lastly I think my project is important and should matter because it focuses on serious issues that can affect almost anyone. In Jamaica, the interests of disabled people are often overlooked as this is confirmed and addressed by my guest on my podcast. Furthermore the voices of special needs persons , regardless if it is just a few will allow others to feel comfortable in sharing their story especially with an audience. If my podcast reaches people who live overseas I think it would be a great accomplishment and beneficial to them as well. The reason for this is because persons who are disabled themselves can relate and feel inspired to be comfortable in their own skin and voice. Also, the challenges and obstacles faced by my guests should reach the hearts of those who listen and there may be a possibility that they are not alone in this.
