Have You Ever Heard of This Verse?
5 Minute Interview Excerpt.
Interviewer Aaliyah Lunan: Hi this is Aaliyah Lunan conducting an interview for Creative Non-Fiction Writing and Digital Media and I have here with me Codwell Lunan and we’re just gonna go over a couple of questions about his experiences in the Jamaican church.
Right. So Codwell, give us your age and can you give us an idea of how long you have been attending church for and how long you’ve kind’ve been just interacting with churches in Jamaica in general.
Interviewee Codwell Lunan: Well. I am sixty-eight (68) years of age and I have been going to church like from about the age of eight and I’ve – y’know – lot of experience – y’know –associate with church so far up until now – y’know.
Alright and can you tell us an experience you’ve had as a young person going to church?
Well as a young person going to church, we used to be barefoot and experience a lot of things during service. In which you used to have people who not on one accord and sometime actually turn out to fight y’know. For instance, a sister would get up to testify and another person would jump up and say – um – “SIT DOWN” y’know because them feel like say the sister commit some form of sin or otherwise y’know. Lots of ups and downs and ruption. I even see young man carrying knife to church to defend his parents at times.
Alright. Sounds like a lot of bangarang in essence. Can you tell me about some scriptures or Bible verses that you have read in the bible but have never heard them being talked about in church or ever heard any preacher mention them at all?
Mek me see now… for instance, like when – Bible verse like when Peter said many think this is a way to get rich. I haven’t heard any preacher of any sort mention that verse. Um, scripture like when Paul say him Paul deserve money but as for the gospel sake him doesn’t take any. I haven’t heard any preacher of any or any type or size or what…mention those scripture y’know? Um, other scriptures like um, the women should be quiet in all the churches and if they have anything to say that they should say it to their husband. Those scriptures are usually played down for various reason.
For instance another scripture that when the Lord taught people how to pray and said when you gwoin pray first enter into your closet and when the door is closed pray to me (God) which is in secret and I will reward you openly. And as for fasting y’know nowadays you find people boast and say them fasting like y’know on a Wednesday you see a whole heap of people long down them face and drop dung them face so that everybody can know that them fasting. But you know it not supposed to be so. Um like the scripture – Matthew chapter 6 – where Christ says if you fasting in you house and anybody come to yuh you should noint your face with oil so that no man know that you fasteth y’know and scripture like those always been buried under the carpet.
